I’m the chief book trailer designer here at 4WillsPub and I’m often asked, “What does it take to make an awesome book trailer, Nonnie?”
Well, first, you have to have the Midas touch to craft just the right trailer. I didn’t make that up – it’s true. We see many book trailers “blanketing” the airwaves, but, the difference between many, is everything about that trailer that makes you want to rush out and purchase that book, and absolutely nothing about the one that has you clicking out of it before it gets halfway through to the end.
I’m a firm believer that book trailers DO sell books. How? Well, if they’re crafted just right, there’s not another item in your arsenal of marketing tools that will push readers to your book faster! But, before I move on, let me answer a few more questions that you might have.
What is the purpose of a book trailer?
The purpose of a trailer is to take readers beyond your book’s blurb and deeper into the “grit” of your story.
How effective are book trailers?
Imagine you’re in a movie theater and a trailer of an upcoming movie plays before your movie begins. It is so captivating that you pull out your phone and mark the date of December 28, 2025, in your calendar because you WANT to see that movie on the date that it hits the big screen! A great book trailer pushes a reader into the same urgency for your upcoming new release or your already published book that they didn’t know much about until they saw your book trailer.
Here are the elements to that “great” book trailer:
- for starters, a creative mind with just the right eye for even the smallest detail
- an interesting script
- just the right images and other visuals
- the perfect fonts
- the most appropriate transitions
- perfectly timed frames so that the trailer is between 2 and 3 minutes long
- and lastly, just the right piece of music that will make every viewer believe that it was tailor-made specifically for that particular book/story!
An effective book trailer tells a good story instead of just dropping hints in the span of 30-60 seconds.
If I only had the time to spend going into greater detail here, I would, but, my time is not my own.
I’ll leave you with the 4WillsPub Marketing Trailer which will give you a little taste of what I’ve detailed above, and I encourage you to drop by and visit some of OUR CLIENT BOOK TRAILERS (which will have you running out to buy the books if you don’t already have them!)
Please drop a comment below for your chance at winning one of the awesome prizes above!

Hi,
Your blog went up as I went to bed. So, I am just answering, and I am sorry I missed the discount. I talked with you yesterday but the blog tour post was not up yet. Now, all I can say is that I am very much impressed with what 4Wills offers. I think it is a fantastic palate which focuses on quality, and I will soon find that out because I have chosen your 4Wills to release my first short story ever, and I am so excited.

Nonnie–You created an incredible book trailer for my novel. AND–I didn’t even know what a book trailer was until I joined RRBC! I am learning so much. You CAN teach an (ahem) old dog new tricks! I would definitely recommend that writers investigate and use book trailers to capture the essence of their writing. And you are a magician with that creation!

I agree that book trailers are a key element in a book’s marketing program. It gives the reader a better feel for the story and characters than a book summary or synopsis. A trailer can also grab attention in a crowded marketplace, where books are being released quicker than ever before.

The trailer was catchy with a nice beat. I enjoyed it and would have ordered my own trailer had I been ready for one. And that’s the truth.

4Willis is so helpful. We love the Out of Poland video, and we were so picky and delighted you still speak to us. A great value. I want to see a commercial to see what mileage that gets. Thank you.

Aww, thanks, Rox! I don’t quite get the “commercial” bit. Clue me in here? 🙂

The support that 4WillsPub gives to authors is fantastic. This post taught me a lot about the importance of trailers and the secrets behind the creation of a great ‘teaser’ for books. Well done all involved.

Hi Nonnie! I love your response to what it takes to make an awesome book trailer and enjoyed watching the customer trailers. You are correct that it is a craft. It appears that 4WP is a professional company with the correct talent, tools, and imagination to make any book stand out. I intend to use 4WP for my next book trailer project. In the past, fabricating my own book trailers has taken me a ton of time in writing a script, securing the right photos and music, and then putting it all together. In the future, I am glad that making book trailers will be one less thing I’ll have to worry about after publishing my next books.

Hi, John! You are correct, we’ve got what it takes and your kind words are so appreciated. We don’t stop until your trailer is as amazing as you think it should be!
And you all are so sweet – I wish I could be a mini-Oprah today. If they’d let me, I’d shout: “You get a trailer! You get a trailer! And, you, too, get a trailer! You’re all going home with trailers today!”
But, they’d cut me if I did that, so, until I’m given the freedom to go FREE, we’re here when you’re ready! Hahaha

Me, too, Flossie! They really do push us to check out the books. Each time I’ve completed a trailer, my hubby says, “So, when is that movie coming out?” I’ve had others to say similar things like, “I can’t wait to see that movie!” That’s how a trailer should make you feel! Like there’s more to come and it’s coming in a great big package – like the big screen!

In my opinion, book trailers are like an appetizer before the entre, your book. When I investigated membership in RRBC, I noticed right away that 4wills publishing puts out first-class trailers and other perks in the publishing business.
You are offering an amazing giveaway with images and video to create a custom trailer. Very generous, Nonnie!

Hi, Marian! Thank you for such kind words. It’s always nice when what you love doing is noticed – in a good way.
FYI: The giveaway is for images and videos, not a trailer.
Thanks for dropping by! It’s so appreciated!

Hi, Nonnie, it also takes the know-how to produce a trailer that spurs you to action. It is true. A well-crafted trailer sells books.

Hi Nonnie, I like how a book trailer gives me a feel for the emotions related to the story.

So true, Wendy! That’s always important. A trailer has to make you feel something before you will act.
