6 Words That Can Ruin Your Sentence – #RRBC

Here at 4WillsPublishing, we’re all about sharing info that can only help you to become a better writer.  What better info to share than 6 words that can ruin your sentence.  So, let’s jump right into it:

*ACTUALLY:  Crutch words are words that we slip into sentences in order to give ourselves more time to think, or to emphasize a statement. Over time, they become unconscious verbal tics. Most often, crutch words do not add meaning of a statement. Actually is the perfect example of a crutch word. It is meant to signify something that exists in reality, but it is more often used as a way to add punch to a statement (as in, “I actually have no idea”). The next word is one of the most chronically misused crutch words in English…

*LITERALLY:  This adverb should be used to describe an action that occurs in a strict sense. Often, however, it is used inversely to emphasize a hyperbolic or figurative statement: “I literally ran 300 miles today.” Literally is one of the most famously used crutch words in English. The next one, however, may surprise you…

*BASICALLY:  This word is used to signal truth, simplicity, and confidence, like in “Basically, he made a bad decision.” It should signify something that is fundamental or elementary, but too often this word is used in the context of things that are far from basic, in order to create a sense of authority and finality. What’s our next adverb offender?

*HONESTLY:  This crutch word is used to assert authority or express incredulity, as in, “Honestly, I have no idea why he said that.” However, it very rarely adds honesty to a statement. The next crutch word is perhaps the most famous one out there…

*LIKE:  The cardinal sinner of lazy words, like is interspersed in dialogue to give a speaker more time to think or because the speaker cannot shake the habit of using the word. Like should describe something of the same form, appearance, kind, character, or amount. But, very often, it is used involuntarily in conversation, just like um. Our next and final word is not so obvious…

*OBVIOUSLY:  This word should signify an action which is readily observable, recognized, or understood. Speakers tend to use it, however, to emphasize their point with regards to things that aren’t necessarily obvious: “Obviously he should have thrown the ball to first base.” What crutch words do you rely on?

Friends, I obviously might be an offender, but, basically, when I use these words, I’m clearly trying to express a point.  Honestly, I had no idea I was using the words incorrectly and literally cringed when I read this article.  I was likereally?

Seriously, though…we want you to share your crutch words with us…I’ve definitely added my own (underlined)!

Watch Nonnie Write!

Authors, how much time do you spend trying to market your books while scouring the web for any and all information you can find on writing?  Well, if you’re like many of the authors I know,  you spend more time than you’d like anyone to know about.

This is not an easy business we’re in, but, it is one that our souls call us to be apart of.  Yes, for those of us who are born with the gift of the talent of writing, and for those of us who spend the time trying to hone our skills in the craft, we HAVE to do this…our spirit will not allow us to rest unless we are writing.  I penned the quote below to describe my own urgency to write:

 “How I know I’m a writer:  When I sleep, I wake to write;  when I dream, I rouse to write;  when…

(1) $10 Amazon gift card (Courtesy of Harmony Kent) Author of “MOMENTS”

OK, so, this was not the scheduled stop for today, but it is now, and in my opinion, it will be the most amazing stop along the entire tour!

I scoured Kathryn’s blog to try and find a post that would in some small way, sum up her passion for what she so strongly advocated for, and, also to give you a glimpse into what she was going thru and having to deal with, on a daily basis.

Here is a post that she wrote on September 8, 2014…it’s entitled:  NATIONAL INVISIBLE ILLNESS WEEK.  This is a perfect post, because she often shared with me, that people thought she was crazy and that her illness was all in her own head.

Kathryn’s no longer here with us.  She passed away two months after she wrote this post, after having celebrated RRBC’s Christmas Party online with us.  We think of Kathryn often, and it’s funny how sometimes we speak of her, as if she’s still here, and for those of us who she touched so deeply, she is.

Here’s the post:

Today (September 8, 2014) is the start of National Invisible Chronic Illness  Awareness Week which runs through September 14th.

How many of you who are ill with environmental illness, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, etc., have been told that you don’t look sick?  I have been told that I look good when I feel horrible.  On one hand, I am glad that I am not looking as horrible as I may feel, but it is hard to explain to others when you may not look as bad as you feel. On August 3, 2012, I posted on this site, “Me in the Beginning.”  When you look at my picture taken in 2002, it is easy to see how sick I was.  I don’t even think I realized how sick I looked, until later when I saw my picture.  I knew I felt bad and something horrible was wrong, but looking at myself in the mirror daily, the changes were gradual.  I didn’t suddenly wake up with dark circles, a haunting look, skinnier than I had ever been and with yellowing skin tone.

I want to raise awareness that environmental illness, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and other chronic illnesses may not necessarily affect a person’s appearance. It is truly an invisible and silent terror that many go through on a daily basis.  I hope that a day will come when someone says they have some unusual or unexplained illness, they will be treated with respect and their complaints taken seriously.

Toni Bernhard wrote a wonderful article entitled The challenges of Living with Invisible Pain or Illness.  I hope writings such as this one, will allow you to know that you are not alone in your battle with invisible illness.

Please take a moment to visit the Invisible Illness  website and read the stories that others have shared.

I hope that all of you who visit today will pick up a copy of ALLERGIC TO LIFE.  It is an enlightening and most enjoyable read!

Kathryn’s book and her blog, Facebook page, etc. are all still very alive on the RRBC site, where they will always remain.  I ask that you please follow each of her social media forums and continue to spread the word with us, so that her mission continues and her legacy never dies. **Kathryn, #WeWillNeverForget or #LeaveYouBehind.

Hello, and welcome back to 4WillsPublishing!  Typically, we only feature writing tips, etc. here at 4WP, but today we are doing things a little differently.  When the call went out to help #push #RaveReviewsBookClub’s #PUSHTUESDAY winner for today, we couldn’t pass on the opportunity!  Not just because we were asked, but because for two very special reasons:

1)  Rhani D’Chae is a long-time loyal 4WillsPub client and

2) Rhani D’Chae is a kick-ass writer!  Even with her limited eyesight, Rhani runs circles around the best of us, who are blessed with 20/20 vision. To top this all off, she is also a member of RWISA – RAVE WRITERS INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY OF AUTHORS!  An elite melting pot of some of the “best” writers in the industry.

It is our honor and our pleasure to introduce Rhani to a new audience here today, as well as sharing her latest release:  “A PERILOUS THIRST.”

We ask that you join in with the #RRBC community to spread the word of this amazing writer and her INCREDULOUS READ!  I assure you, you won’t be disappointed by her acquaintance and you will fall in love with her, with every word you read when you pick up a copy of this little gem of a book!

#RRBC, 5 Things Every #Author Should Know!

Hi, and welcome to 4WillsPublishing Author Services where our strong wills keep you moving forward!  We offer top-notch service with our book trailers, blog tours, book covers and more!  So, do take a look around and if you want the best, then you want to become a 4WillsPub client!

Today, I’m going to feed you a little Author Stew…a little of this, and a little of that, but all in the helpful tips department.  So, here goes…I’m going to ask you 5 questions and I just need really simple answers, so let’s begin.

  1.  Did you know that you only have one chance to make a great first impression?  That’s right, only one.  This is the #1 reason that you should ensure that your book is really good and ready to hit the shelves BEFORE you publish. Why?  Well, once it’s out there and someone gets their hands on the first copy, the words that come from that mouth regarding your book, could spread a fire so wide, you couldn’t even imagine putting it out.  One chance…that’s all you get.  So make it good the first time out of the gate;
  2. Did you know that nobody cares about all your degrees?  What does it matter that you have an MA in writing if you can’t even string two sentences together?  Let me answer that question for you…IT MEANS ABSOLUTELY NOTTA…NOTHING!  The only thing that matters is “Are you a good writer?”  {Let me give you an example of touting degrees and how much weight they carry in my world.  I have a friend who has a daughter with 3 Masters Degrees.  She’s healthy, young, married with children, and yet, she lives off government assistance.  She can’t even afford medical insurance on her children…but you always hear the family boasting about how degreed she is!  I have constantly said to them…“Why do you boast about that when she lives the way that she does?” Again, what good is that piece of paper, if what you put out into the world, reflects poorly upon you?}  But, this is all about writing, isn’t it?  I’m always doing that, you know…getting off track.  OK, so I’ve shared that little story just to say, before you go touting your extensively impressive educational background, your writing (or your life) better be superb.  (By the way, I have no degree in writing);
  3. Did you know that in my world, if you can’t write an email, you can’t write a book?  Oh, I know some of you will debate that (please do it in your mind, though)…but it’s true.  This goes back to stringing those two sentences I mentioned above.  But, seriously, here’s the thing…if the email messages that you send are so jumbled and mired with confusion, an astute reader will hit the delete key faster than you can say “THANK YOU” after you’ve been sneeze-blessed.  (I know, I like to talk funny and make you think I’m clever.  Is it working?)  And, if someone feels this way about your email, do you really think they’re on Amazon searching for YOUR book?  (I wouldn’t be, just so we’re clear).  Let everything you write be a reflection of your actual writing, down to the text messages you send from your phone.  When I send text messages, my friends always comment:  “I knew it was you, because no one else takes the time to type this perfectly in a text message.”  Don’t take the lazy route just because it’s easier.  You’ll thank me later;
  4. Did you know that being a good/great writer is hard work?  Of course it is!  If it wasn’t, we wouldn’t have so much junk flooding the literary horizon, and everyone would be a Louisa, Maya, Stephen or Toni (Alcott, Angelou, King, McMillan).  It’s not easy ensuring that everything that we put out in written form is properly edited;  it’s not easy taking the time to go back and proof after the proofreader;  it’s not easy having to fork over all that money to ensure that you are not contributing to Amazon’s ‘Pay-to-Play’ policy, because that’s all it is.  As long as they get a cut of your money, you’re allowed to publish ANY kind of book you want, be it class or trash.  A word to the wise:  just because you can, doesn’t mean you should;
  5. Did you know that your online reputation is just as important as your off-line one?  Just because you sit, hidden behind a keyboard, in no way means that people aren’t taking note of your behavior.  The same way you make friends in your real world, is the same way you make them here, by being nice, kind and showing people that you’re a decent person.  On the other side of that coin, when you are nasty, rude and your online behavior dictates that you have the morals of a cat, people tend to stay far away from you…the decent ones, that is. Be careful of what you put in email, and breathe before you post anything heated to social media.  If you don’t wish to be labeled negatively, I’d say watch yourself.  The world is watching intently and the internet has a long memory.  Some things just can’t be erased!

There you have it, in a tiny nutshell…five of the most important things I think every author should know.  I hope this information has helped you in some way, and if it has, please share this post on all of your social media forums.

Thanks for dropping by today and we’ll see you here again soon for another inspiring and helpful post!  Before you go, do share a comment with us below!

4WillsPublishing is a company on a mission to help get more great writing out into the world. We offer author services to help market books in the best light possible, such as virtual blog tours, book trailers, honest EXPRESS book reviews, social media tweeting/sharing service, research & ghost writing, manuscript evaluations and so much more!  Unlike many companies that are popping up virtually, offering below par services in order to make a quick buck,  we are in business to help you perfect your work, not to take your money.  We offer quality, top notch services at prices that won’t break your bank….because, we’re all about being that one entity that wants the best for authors, so that they are putting only the best out into the market.  It’s no secret that the literary market is saturated with enough “junk” already, so no matter what company you decide to use, ensure that they are representing you in the best light.

Although 4WillsPublishing is owned by 4 skilled intellectuals and avid readers, only one of us is an author…any of you ever heard the name NONNIE JULES?  Nonnie loves great reads and has an innate desire to help others succeed, which is why she spends more time working to propel others and getting them recognized, than she spends marketing her own books and brand.   You need help? Ask Nonnie.  Want an honest opinion about something?  Ask Nonnie.  Support is what she does best.

Now, let us take a moment to introduce you to some of our awesome and extremely loyal Clients and their great reads.  Below the author’s name, you will find each service(s) that we have performed for them.  Many of them return to us over and over and over again. Take a look…

Book Trailer

As you can see, our trailers are of the highest caliber and they deliver in the areas they should:  1)  They tell a story, and 2) they entice viewers to want to know more about the book, and to ultimately buy the book;  two of the most important components of book trailers.  Is your book trailer serving these two main purposes?

The bulk of our business is repeat and referral business.  Our Clients know that we work hard behind the scenes to make them look good.  4WillsPublishing Clients expect professionalism, great service, great services, and great prices…we deliver on all!  Check out some of our Client Testimonials!

Many of our Clients come to us not knowing what a Virtual Blog Tour is, or the importance of having one (or many), but after booking and experiencing their own, many have shared with us their new appreciation for them.  Virtual Blog Tours are not just about selling books; they’re about name-recognition, because once the world knows who you are and begins to connect with you on new levels, the book sales will come.  Readers have to know you first, and so that’s what we offer here at 4WillsPublishing.  We get your name out there, and from that, your brand starts to build, or as they say:  from humble beginnings, empires are built.

We couldn’t list and profile ALL of our Client book trailers, book covers and blog tours here in this one little post, so we are asking that you visit OUR BOOK TRAILERS forum to take a look at our other awesome trailers.  We’re also asking that you take a moment to stop by our PAST BLOG TOURS forum, and support our Clients, who, although their virtual blog tours have ended, their books are still available for you to purchase, read and review. (If you have read all the way down this far, then you will know how important it is to leave a comment.  Those who do, and include the number #452 anywhere in their comment, gets entered into a special drawing for a $20.00 Amazon Gift Card.  Now, let’s see how many of you will read the entire post!  I’d advise you not helping anyone out here, because if you do, it lessens your chances to win!!! If you visit again and notice that your comment has been altered, that means that we’ve removed that common thing in the comment, which cheaters might start to piggy back off of;  but rest assured, we’re keeping track of the authentic ones!).  If you enjoy great reading material, visit some of these stops and be blown away by the excerpts and material you find there.

We can’t leave here today without thanking some of our awesome Clients who were not listed above, but who are just as important to us as the ones who are.  We hope that you will take a look at their work and support them in any, and every way you can.  They are:

The Ugly Truth About Book Sales

I came across this article and was so impressed that it was so on-point. This is why book tours are gaining in popularity. You can never go on too many!

Leona's Blog of Shadows

Today I am going to share some eye-opening truths, which might shatter the illusions regarding the book publishing business and crush the dreams of some folk out there. I have recently come across a rather interesting blog post link in the comments section under a post at Suffolk Scribblings blog.

It was a rather grim post by author Kameron Hurley. For those who are not familiar with her, she is an established author who has been a finalist for the Arthur C. Clarke Award, the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, the Locus Award and the BSFA Award for Best Novel. Her short fiction has appeared in prestigious SFF magazines such as Lightspeed, EscapePod, and Strange Horizons. Her fiction has been translated into Romanian, Swedish, Spanish, and Russian. She is also a graduate of Clarion West. Impressive credentials many of us dream about accomplishing some day, if ever.

According to her…
